Car registration in Czech Republic is only possible with residence permit
If you want to get your car registered in the Czech Republic, you must have some form of residence permit in the Czech Republic. That applies even to EU citizens who generally do not need one to live or work here. Luckily, it is not too complicated for EU citizens to get registered here. If you are an EU citizen, make sure you get your Registration Certificate through the MOI. An alternative option would be registering the car under an s.r.o. for example but that brings other implications (i.e. taxes) so we recommend to consult with a Tax Adviser about this option.
What other documents are needed to get Czech car registration (license) plates?
If you already have the registration certificate or a residence permit, it is time to collect the other required documents. While the exact set of documents can vary based on the country of origin of the car and it’s age, these are the documents you generally need to submit in most cases:
- passport + registration certificate/residence permit,
- filled in registration form,
- original technical passport of the car – if there are more parts of the passport (i.e. in Germany Teil I and Teil II, similar in the Netherlands), you need both parts,
- COC – Certificate of Conformity,
- Czech insurance of the car (we can offer up to 10 different options),
- if the car is not registered in your name yet (i.e. you just bought it), you need the purchase contract,
- “evidence check” of the car – this applies to all cars,
- “technical check” – this generally applies to cars older than 4 years,
- 800 CZK admin fee for the municipality – at the moment does not apply to electric cars,
- Power of Attorney – we can take care of the whole process on your behalf, based on a Power of Attorney.
Where to get your car registered in the Czech Republic?
You can technically get your car registered through any “Registr vozidel” in the Czech Republic. Generally it’s best to go to the one responsible to the place where you live but it is not mandatory. There are four branches in Prague – in Praha 3 – Jarov, Praha 6 – Břevnov, Praha 9 – Vysočany and Praha 10 – Vršovice (Bohdalec).
How long does it take to get Czech car registration (license) plates?
If you go through this process yourself be prepared to make multiple trips to the registration office since they usually do not speak English there and it might be difficult to prepare all the documents correctly the first time. Once you submit everything though, it usually takes only couple days to get the Czech license plates, generally no more than a week, depending on their current workload and capacity.
