Moving from the USA to the Czech Republic in 2026: Why This
May 2, 2026
Are you tired of the endless hustle, the car-dependent lifestyle, and the astronomical costs of raising a family in the US? You’re not alone. More and more Americans are looking at Central Europe—specifically the Czech Republic—as their next home.
But what is it actually like to swap a life in Louisiana or London for the cobblestone streets of Prague?
We sat down with Amanda, an American expat and content creator who came to Prague for a 4-week course and ended up staying for 8 years. Her story is the perfect example of why the Czech Republic isn't just a travel destination—it's a place to build a life. Check the full Borderline Czech podcast episode here.
1. The Pace of Life: "Work to Live," Not the Other Way Around
In the US, identity is often tied to the "hustle culture." Amanda points out a refreshing difference: in Czechia, people work to support their lives, not live for their jobs.
"Sacred Weekends": Unlike the US, where you might feel guilty for taking a sick day or vacation, Czech culture respects personal time.
Presence over Productivity: Amanda noticed that parents here are much more integrated into daily life, bringing kids to "adult" spaces like local pubs (hospoda) with playgrounds, rather than separating the two worlds.
2. Safety: A Statistical (and Emotional) Relief
One of the biggest "pain points" for American parents is safety. Statistically, the Czech Republic is consistently ranked among the safest countries in the world.
Raising Kids without Fear: Amanda shares that while she didn't always feel "unsafe" in the States, the likelihood of dangerous incidents is simply much lower here.
Independence: The city's infrastructure allows for a level of freedom for children that is hard to find in car-centric US suburbs.
3. The "Smallest Big City" Experience
Prague offers a "metropolitan" feel with everything you need, yet it still feels like a village where you can find your community.
Public Transport > Cars: Amanda and her husband haven't owned a car in 8 years. Between the world-class metro and trams, you can get everywhere—and if you have kids, they often ride for free!
Walkability: Be prepared to trade your driving minutes for walking steps. As Amanda says, you can't walk a block without hitting a playground.
4. Healthcare and Birth: A "Shocking" Comparison
Coming from the US healthcare system, the Czech experience can feel like another planet.
The "200 CZK" Bill: Amanda shared her experience giving birth in Prague. While American hospital bills can be terrifying, her bill at the hospital was essentially just a nominal fee of 200 crowns (roughly $8).
Efficiency vs. Bedside Manner: While Czech doctors are highly efficient, they are more direct and less focused on "small talk" or "bedside manner" than American doctors. It’s a trade-off for a system that works and won't bankrupt you.
5. The Community: Finding Your "Walnut" Friends
Czechs are often described as "walnuts"—hard on the outside but soft and loyal once you get to know them.
Building a "chosen family": Amanda emphasizes that moving abroad teaches you how to find your people. Her friends in Prague have become her family, even helping read bedtime stories to her toddlers.
