Czech Republic Entry Requirements for US Citizens (“Tourist Visa”)
Us citizens are allowed to enter the Czech Republic without any visa required for up to 90 days stays. What you have to keep in mind when doing so, what changes are coming and what to do if you want to stay longer than the 90 days, is all covered in this article.

1. 90 days visa-free stay for US citizens
As a US citizen, you can enter the Czech Republic under the short-stay visa-free regime. American tourists do not need a visa for visits to the Czech Republic for less than ninety (90) days.
The rule follows the Schengen framework:
-
You can stay up to 90 days in any 180-day period across the entire Schengen Area, not just the Czech Republic.
-
The 180-day period is rolling — every day you spend in Schengen counts.
-
The 90 visa-free days generally do not reset when you leave the Schengen Area. There was a "just leave for a day and come back" between the USA and Poland called "1991 Visa Waiver Agreement" but that might cease now due to the EES (see below).

2. No extension of the 90-day visa-free stay & no “bridge visa”
Important restriction:
The 90-day visa-free stay cannot be extended. The only exception would be if you physically can not leave the CZE (i.e. you are in a hospital). Other than that, once you reach the 90-day limit, you must leave the Schengen Area.
If you apply for a visa or residence permit while in the Czech Republic, this does not automatically allow you to stay longer than 90 days. There is no “bridge” visa for Americans switching from a short-stay to a long-term visa locally. The only residence permit option that allows you to stay in the Czech Republic while processing your application is the Temporary Residence Permit for Close Family Members of EU citizens, potentially the Partnership Visa.

Pro tip: If you want to stay longer or apply for a visa, do it before your 90-day stay ends. Our consultants can prepare everything while you’re still in the US or during your first days in Schengen Area.
