Thinking about moving to the Czech Republic as a digital nomad? The (still pretty new) Digital Nomad visa is one of the easiest ways for IT and marketing professionals to live and work legally in Czechia. In this guide, we’ll explain who can apply, what documents are required, and what the process looks like.
Important: This article is here to give you an overview. It is not a complete do-it-yourself manual. Czech immigration law is full of exceptions and details that can make or break your application. If you want to make sure your visa is approved, get in touch with us and we’ll guide you step by step.
Who can apply for Czech Digital Nomad Visa – allowed nationalities
The Digital Nomad visa is a fairly new program in Czech Immigration. It is still in a testing phase. It started as a program for remote workers from selected “safe” countries. Later on, more countries were added. Right now, citizens of the below countries are eligible for the Digital Nomad Visa in the Czech Republic (clicking on each highlighted nationality takes you to a guide explaining the specifics of the particular nationality):
- Australia
- Brazil
- Canada
- India
- Israel
- Japan
- Mexico
- New Zealand
- South Korea
- Taiwan
- United Kingdom
- United States
If you are from a country that is not in the above list, you can not apply for the Czech Digital Nomad Visa at the moment.
Who can apply for Czech Digital Nomad Visa – allowed specializations
The Digital Nomad program in the Czech Republic started as a program for IT specialists only. Later on Marketing specialists were added. The exact definition of the “specialists” is given by the Czech Ministry of Industry and Trade and goes like this:
IT Specialist – comprehensively defines the directions of technical development in line with software and system requirements, while considering the specific needs of the company or client.
Marketing Specialist – manages/ implements/ oversees the marketing activities of a company or client. They are responsible for coordinating and participating in marketing research, product planning, market analysis, pricing strategies, distribution policies, sales promotions, and customer service management, they collaborate with the company’s advertising, marketing, PR, and sales departments or with external agencies handling these areas. This role often involves expertise in a specific marketing discipline, such as SEO, advertising, digital marketing, influencer marketing, social media management, copywriting, content marketing, market research, field and event marketing, media marketing, or brand marketing.
Minimum income requirement for the Czech Digital Nomad Visa
To qualify, you need to prove a regular monthly income above a certain threshold that you will be receiving during your whole stay in the Czech Republic. The government does not really care about your current or past income but about a promise of your future income.
One of the requirements (see below sections) is to obtain a written statement from your client confirming they will be paying you enough during your whole stay in the Czech Republic.
This is why the Czech Digital Nomad Visa Program is not really meant for people who run their own websites and or have multiple small (individual) clients.
The best chances are for people who work for one big client or employer and get majority of their income from that one client or employer. If you for example sell marketing courses online, you might meet the “Marketing Specialist” definition but you will hardly provide a proof of stable expected income so you will hardly qualify for the Digital Nomad Program.
As for the actual amount of money you need to be making. This is defined as 1.5 of the official Czech national average salary. This is always introduced in April and is valid from May 1 of the particular year to April 30 of the next year. For the period of May 2025 to April 2026 is the Czech national average defined as 46 165 CZK. That means the minimum income for the Digital Nomad Program is 46 165 x 1.5 = 69 248 CZK a month.
Documents checklist for the Czech Digital Nomad Visa
Before we jump into the actual checklist, it is important to understand that there is actually no “Digital Nomad Visa” in the Czech Republic. Digital Nomad is not a visa category or a purpose of stay. If you are a freelance Digital Nomad, you apply for a standard “Business Visa“. If you are an employee Digital Nomad, you apply for so called “Other Visa“. What is different in case of the Digital Nomad version of these visa types is that on top of the standard requirements, you also have to get a Digital Nomar Registration from the Czech Ministry of Industry and Trade (MIT).
Czech Digital Nomad Visa – Checklist – Business Visa
- application form,
- passport,
- 2 passport sized photos,
- proof of accommodation in the Czech Republic for at least a year,
- proof of funds (not the proof of income which is only valid for the Digital Nomad registration with the MIT),
- Czech trade license,
- Digital Nomad Registration from Czech MIT,
- Criminal Check from the country of origin and all countries where you have lived longer than 6 months in the last 3 years,
- Czech health insurance (only needed after visa approval).
⚠️ Most of the documents must be originals (no copies, no scans, pdfs etc.). All must be in Czech or officially translated into Czech, and non-Czech documents might need to be apostilled or super-legalized first. Missing or wrongly prepared paperwork is the most common reason for delays and rejections.

Application process (step by step)
-
Collect all required documents for both the Digital Nomad Visa application itself and for the Digital Nomad Registration.
- Apply for the Digital Nomad Registration with the Czech MIT.
-
Go submit your Digital Nomad Visa application to the Czech Embassy of your choosing – this is what basically all applicants trying to apply for the Czech Digital Nomad Visa on their own do wrong. The thing is that if the MIT approves your Digital Nomad registration, they also immediately contact the Embassy of your choosing and book a submission date for you. This date can be “next week” so you must make sure you have all the Digital Nomad Visa requirements ready to go BEFORE you apply for the Digital Nomad Registration.
-
Wait for the decision (see processing time below).
-
Get Czech Health Insurance – the insurance you need to get is different for the Business Visa and for the Other Visa. You always need some type (and some duration) of Czech health insurance to collect your visa. Get in touch with us for the best health insurance rates.
- Go collect the visa from the same Embassy where you applied for it – different collection rules apply at different Embassies (i.e. you can only collect the visa on Tuesdays and Thursdays within specified hours).
-
After collection – what happens after collection of your Czech Digital Nomad Visa depends on the type of visa you applied for. In both cases (business and other), you should go get registered with the Foreign Police within 3 days after your arrival. In case of the business visa, you need to get a special confirmation from the Foreign Police that is needed for activation of your trade license and the subsequent social security, tax office and health care registrations (where applies).
Sounds simple? In reality, each of these steps has many small traps. For example, embassies often have long waiting times, and even one missing stamp can cause a refusal.
Processing time
This is a bit complicated topic. As mentioned, there is no official Digital Nomad Visa in the Czech Immigration so there is no specific timeline for the Digital Nomad Visa itself. The official approval time for the other visa is 60-90 days, for the business visa it is 90-120 days.
The official recommendation of the Ministry of Industry and Trade is that visas submitted under the Digital Nomad Program should get their decision within 45 days.
From out daily experience, it often comes even sooner – most of our clients have been approved within 30 days after submission.
Taxes and social security for digital nomads
Tax matters related to Digital Nomads can get pretty complex depending on your situation. We always recommend speaking with an accountant if you are not 100% clear about some of the rules.
Generally speaking, you become a Czech tax resident after 183 days of living in the Czech Republic, which is also something you will need to get confirmed by Czech Tax Office and proved to the Ministry of the interior if you plan on staying longer than the first year.
If you want to discuss tax related matters. get in touch and we’ll connect you to one of our Tax Advisers.
Common reasons for rejection/complications with the Czech Digital Nomad Visa
We have had all application for the Czech Digital Nomad Visa approved for our clients. When people try to apply for the Digital Nomad Visa on their own or with unexperienced “advisors”, there are the most common mistakes they make:
- incomplete/incorrect documentation – this is not a reason for denial, this is a reason for not having your application accepted by the Embassy at all. All visa application must be complete and perfect otherwise they are no acceptable. Although the process we describe above might sounds simple, there are many little things than can actually go wrong easily if you do not have the knowledge and experience. Just to name a few related to just the proof of accommodation part – accommodation for shorter period than a year (which shortens the validity of your visa), accommodation documents not signed by the actual owner, a flat not actually being a flat (a lot of attic spaces, cellars and offices have been turned into “apartments” during the last years – and although they look like apartments, they are still officially listed as cellars or offices, and you can not officially live in an office or a cellar so any apartments like this will not work for the visa process).
-
mistakes/delays in preparation phase – also usually not a reason for denial but a reason why something that could have been finished in 3 months takes 6 or more, often causing you not only a lot of unnecessary stress but also costing you a lot of unnecessary money. For example, getting a trade license is a completely separate process that requires some steps to be taken before you even apply for the Digital Nomad Registration at the MIT, as well as many steps after the approval (Foreign Police confirmation, social, tax and health registrations etc.). If any of these steps is done incorrectly, it can set you back many weeks. Also timing of all the steps is very important. If you for example apply for the Digital Nomad Registration way before you have all the documents required for the actual visa application, it is likely you will miss your submission appointment. The official rules of the Digital Nomad Program say that the appointment can not be rescheduled so you might have potentially lost your only chance to get the Digital Nomad Visa. In real life, we’ve already had to reschedule for some of our clients and Embassies have been very helpful but that is more of their good will than behaving “by the book”.
- rejection – as mentioned earlier, we have not had any rejections of our Digital Nomad clients. Also, generally speaking, if the Embassy lets you submit the application (meaning you had all the required documentation in the required form), Digital Nomad Visa is one of the most likely to get actually approved. The only potential reason for denial might be related to your funds.
Alternatives to the Czech Digital Nomad visa
If after reading all the above information, you do not think you are eligible for the Digital Nomad Visa in the Czech Republic, we can still try to find some other options for you. Unfortunately, there is no other visa in Czech Immigration that would be suitable for people who make or have enough money and just want to live in the Czech Republic. For all other visa types than the Digital Nomad Visa, you must prove a solid-enough connection to the Czech Republic and a strong-enough reason to get a visa. Read more about some possible options below.
-
Standard Business Visa – this is meant for freelancers or entrepreneurs who want to run their business in the Czech Republic. If your business is online or not really tied to the Czech Republic, this is not really an option for you.
-
Employee Card or Blue Card– residence permits based on local (Czech) employment.
-
Student visa – meant for full time students of Czech accredited Bachelor’s or Master’s programs.
- Family Reunification Visa – this visa is meant for family members who plan on moving with you (i.e. spouses and/or children).
- Temporary Residence Permit (or “partnership visa“) – these are meant for family members of EU citizens – i.e. spouses, children or, in case of the partnership visa, girlfriends/boyfriends.

FAQs about the Czech Digital Nomad Visa
Can family members be added to the Czech Digital Nomad Visa application?
Yes and no. Family members of Digital Nomads can apply for their Family Reunification Visa along with the main applicant. This means that a Digital Nomad can bring their family members with them, they have to submit their own separate applications though, they can not be simply “added” into the Digital Nomad application.
