Czech Digital Nomad Visa for US Citizens

Are you an American thinking about moving to the Czech Republic as a digital nomad? Good news – US citizens are among the nationalities most welcome in the Czech Republic’s Digital Nomad Visa program. We have covered all the general details in our comprehensive Czech Digital Nomad Visa – Full 2025 Guide. In the article you are currently reading, we focus on the specifics for US citizens.

Chances of Approval compared to other nationalities in the Czech Digital Nomad Program

Generally speaking, US citizens have the highest change of getting any Czech visa approved. The same applies for the Digital Nomad Visa as well. It certainly does not mean that all applications of US citizens are approved, even Americans get denied, especially when trying to get their visa on their own or when using unexperienced “advisers”.

If you submit incomplete or incorrect documentation, if you do not pass the immigration interview well (primarily done for business and student visas), if you do not properly explain your motivation to move to the Czech Republic, your business plan etc., you can still get easily denied.

If we compare two applicants with exactly the same set of documents and same situation, just two different nationalities, US citizens always have higher chances of approval.

Specifics of Americans applying for the Czech Digital Nomad Visa

Compared to other nationalities eligible for the Digital Nomad Visa in the Czech Republic, these are the specifics for US citizens:

  • Criminal Check – if you are applying for the Digital Nomad visa as an employee, you do not need an actual criminal check from the US under any circumstances, you can always just sign a sworn statement at the Czech Embassy when submitting your application. If you are applying as a freelancer, the situation changes. Depending on where you plan on submitting your application (US vs Europe), you might need to get an official FBI Background check, apostilled and officially translated into Czech.
  • Proof of Funds – you have to prove that you have enough money in your bank account for both the Business  Visa and the Other Visa (just different amounts). The ideal solution is getting a physical letter (on a letterhead of your bank, signed and stamped by a clerk) from your bank in the US. If that is not possible, you can use other options as well but you always need to make sure that you have enough and stay enough during the whole approval process. Given that the CZK and USD exchange rate fluctuates in time, you must make sure that you will stay above the required minimum in CZK whatever the exchange rate.
  • Czech Health Insurance – if you apply for the employee version of the Digital Nomad Visa (the “other” type), you just need to buy private Czech health insurance covering the whole validity of your approved visa. If you apply as a freelancer though, things get interesting. You will basically need to buy two months of private insurance (to be able to collect the visa from the Embassy) and once you activate your trade license and get registered to the social security, tax and public insurance systems, you will have to start contributing to the public health care system on monthly basis.

Embassy appointments for US citizens applying for the Czech Digital Nomad Visa

Americans can apply for their Czech visas through any Czech embassy in the world which accepts visa applications. Most of our US clients apply for their Digital Nomad Visa in Dresden, Germany since applying in Europe makes the process smoother and more convenient.

Some clients prefer applying in the US though. It is worth mentioning that applying in the US has it specifics. For example in many cases, the Czech Embassies in the US do not want to meet you in person and ask you to mail your application in. Although this might sound convenient, it is often the opposite – the whole process takes longer, the Embassy keeps your passport effectively preventing you from traveling, any complications with the application take longer to resolve.

Another thing is that applying in the US makes the approval process longer as well. The reason is that Embassies do not make decisions about long-term visas. They only collect the documents from you and then physically ship it to the Czech Republic for the decision making process. Shipping documents from Dresden is significantly faster than shipping them from New York for example.

Taxes and double taxation

The US taxes its citizens worldwide. With the Digital Nomad visa, you might also need to pay taxes in the Czech Republic. To avoid paying twice, it is essential to set things up correctly from the start. Ideally consult with a tax advisor in advance. We’ll be happy to recommend a tax advisor if you do not have yours already.
